why does this product shrink while under the uv light? am i doing it wrong?

You are not doing it wrong. I don't know why it shrinks but it does. You can counter it a bit by making sure you apply a little gel over the free edge before you cure it. Just a little. It's like it gives the gel something to hang onto while curing.

All gel shrinks. But shellac will shrink more than usual if you are laying it on too thick. You need to use very thin layers and make sure you cap the free edge of the nail with each layer.
